Woodman Point to Point Peron Treated Wastewater Main - Update 3

Water Corporation has completed its leak investigation on the Woodman Point to Point Peron Treated Wastewater Main (Main), which transports highly-treated wastewater from treatment plants and industries in the southern metropolitan area to an outfall that discharges 4km offshore.

This week, vacuum excavations uncovered two small sections of the Main, north-east of Lake Richmond in Rockingham, to conduct a visual inspection and test its condition.  Extensive acoustic monitoring had previously suggested a leak at this location. 

During the excavations there was no evidence of a leak, and the Main was found to be in good condition. 

Water Corporation will now carry out further specialised investigations to look for other possible causes of a change in pressure and flow within the Main.

Water quality sampling of Lake Richmond, and further groundwater testing near the section of Main under investigation, has determined there is no evidence of a leak impacting upon the environmental values of the lake.

Water Corporation continues to investigate a leak on its Woodman Point to Point Peron Treated Wastewater Main, which transports highly-treated wastewater from treatment plants and industries in the southern metropolitan area to an outfall four kilometres offshore.

The leak on a small section of the 23km pipeline was confirmed on 17 June and Water Corporation has been actively working to further pinpoint its location using a number of advanced leak detection methods this week.

The small section of pipeline where the leak is occurring is located north-east of Lake Richmond in Rockingham. The Water Corporation continues to work with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) and other stakeholders to determine if there has been any environmental impact to the surrounding area.

Water Corporation plans to conduct an exploratory excavation of the pipeline area under investigation next week, which will help to determine an appropriate repair method to stop the leak.

Water Corporation is investigating a leak on its Woodman Point to Point Peron Treated Wastewater Main, which transports highly-treated wastewater from treatment plants and industries in the southern metropolitan area to an outfall four kilometres offshore.

A leak has been detected in a small section of the underground main in open land north-east of Lake Richmond, Rockingham. Extensive and complex investigations, which concluded on 17 June 2020, detected trace elements of treated wastewater in the area of the leak.  The Water Corporation has started a process to excavate the pipeline to determine the appropriate repair strategy. 

Water Corporation’s current priorities are to stop the leak and to determine if there has been any environmental impact to the surrounding area.

Water Corporation will continue to actively work with its regulators and key stakeholders to manage the situation and achieve the best environmental outcomes.
