Greater water security for Karratha with $15.5 million investment

• New concrete water tank affords greater protection against cyclone damage
• New tank replaces 39-year-old steel plate tank damaged by Tropical Cyclone Damien
• Part of $265.3 million McGowan Government water infrastructure investment across North-West

The security of Karratha's water supply will be enhanced with an improved cyclone-proof water storage tank for the city, announced today by Water Minister Dave Kelly.

The McGowan Government, through Water Corporation, is funding the new 20 million litre tank to replace one damaged by Cyclone Damien last February.

The tropical cyclone extensively damaged the roof of the previous 39-year-old steel plate tank, rendering it uneconomic to repair. The new tank, with concrete walls and roof, will better withstand severe weather events and require less maintenance.

Perth-based SRG Global will commence construction of the tank next month, within the existing footprint at the Water Corporation site off Rosemary Road, with practical completion expected late 2021.

The project will maximise use of local subcontractors, where possible, and has already engaged a local Aboriginal company in early works.

Under the 2020-21 State Budget, the McGowan Government has allocated $968 million over the next four years - including $265.3 million for the North-West - to spend on new regional water infrastructure projects, as well as improvements and upgrades to existing facilities.
