Water Corporation has completed clean-up operations in Northam after some wastewater mixed with stormwater during last week’s flash flooding.

Water sampling of the Avon River was undertaken late last week and the results provided to the Department of Health. These results did not indicate any significant impacts attributable to wastewater. Subsequent sampling was also undertaken today (Monday 8/3/2021), with results to be provided to the Department of Health.

An advisory for the Avon River was put in place as a precautionary measure during flooding. The situation is now controlled and the advisory has been lifted.

Water Corporation thanks residents for their understanding and cooperation.

Water Corporation is advising Northam residents to avoid contact with floodwater, which may have been contaminated by wastewater due to heavy rainfall overnight.

Water Corporation crews are working to restore damaged infrastructure but residents should assume floodwater is contaminated. Measures should be taken to avoid contact with any pooled water and the public should heed any road closure signs.

People should not swim, fish or recreate in the Avon River in the vicinity of Northam until further notice as a precautionary measure.

Other safety precautions include:

  • Do not approach any access chamber (manhole) that appears to be discharging water. The cover could have dislodged due to the water pressure and may be open creating a safety hazard.
  • Wash your hands and affected areas of the body thoroughly with clean warm water and soap, especially before eating.
  • Immediately wash and disinfect any wounds that come into contact with floodwater.
  • Change out of dirty clothes and wash clothes separately.
  • Clean and dry dirty footwear.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any illness.

The community is asked to report any access chambers (manholes) discharging water or dislodged access chamber covers (along with location) to Water Corporation on 13 13 75 (24/7).

Department of Health, Department of Water and Environment Regulation and the Shire of Northam have been notified of the issue.

Water Corporation apologises for any inconvenience this may cause Northam residents and will provide further updates as required.
