New waterwise partnership between Water Corporation and Leschenault Catchment Council

Local green thumbs can learn how to prepare their gardens for summer during a special waterwise workshop hosted by the Leschenault Catchment Council (LCC) and Water Corporation.

Part of the Leschenault Estuary Connect Program, the workshop includes advice from GeoCatch Bay OK Project Coordinator Lisa Massey on understanding different soil types and how garden practices can help protect the region’s waterways.

Participants will also hear from gardening expert Jacquie Nichol, who’ll explain how to select waterwise native plants and design a water-efficient garden.

The workshop is the first of 12 planned over the next three years, and will be hosted in a special backyard garden on Saturday, 9 September from 9am to 11.30am.

Water Corporation South West Manager Nicky Waite said with warmer weather around the corner, now was the time to prepare gardens for summer.

“All the signs point to it being a hot summer, and with around 40 per cent of household water use being outdoors what better time to make sure gardens are waterwise,” Ms Waite said.

“In addition to practical garden advice, participants will hear from experts about how low-nutrient urban gardens contribute to protecting wetland and marine ecosystems more widely.

“The Leschenault Catchment Council play an important role protecting local waterways and we’re proud to support them by contributing to the Leschenault Estuary Connect Program.”

LCC Chair Anne-Marie Offer said the workshops were part of a range of programs and initiatives under the Leschenault Estuary Connect Program.

“Protecting local waterways requires a combined effort across the community, government, industry and groups like the Leschenault Catchment Council,” Ms Offer said.

“These workshops are one way to help spread that message and achieve mutual waterwise benefits for households and the environment.

“Water Corporation has been a great supporter of our work and we look forward to working with them to deliver more waterwise workshops over the coming years.”
