Important summer safety reminder for visitors to Harvey Dam
Water Corporation and the Shire of Harvey are reminding visitors to Harvey Dam to follow the rules so everyone can have a great day out.
Some visitors have been ignoring signs advising power boats, camping, fires, firearms and drones are prohibited. Rubbish has also been left scattered around the facilities.
Water Corporation South West Regional Manager, Nicky Waite, said those breaking the rules impacted others who are there to enjoy a day out with their families and friends.
“Harvey Dam has great facilities for everyone and visitors must respect others and the environment by following the rules, and taking their rubbish home with them at the end of the day,” Ms Waite said.
“There’s no camping at the dam, and it’s not safe to light fires.”
Logs have been installed as barriers preventing unauthorised four-wheel drive access near a boat ramp at the dam.
“Those tracks are steep and unstable, and pose a safety risk,” Ms Waite said.
“Drivers will need to stick to the roads and stay off the dam bank walls. Your safety is paramount.”
Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development rangers will continue to monitor out-of-season marron fishing and check fishing licences and catches.
Shire of Harvey President Cr Michelle Campbell said the Shire was working closely with Water Corporation and other agencies to ensure community members can access and enjoy Harvey Dam safely this summer.
“Harvey Dam is a great place to visit with family and friends, but we need to do it responsibly,” Cr Campbell said.
“We can all play a part in safety at Harvey Dam by observing signage in the area and following site rules.”
Visitors should report antisocial behaviour at the dam to the WA Police on 131444 and report littering to Keep Australia Beautiful 1300 007 376.
