Repairs progressing to fix damaged wastewater main in Fitzroy Crossing
Water Corporation is progressing repairs to a damaged wastewater pipeline in Fitzroy Crossing, with work expected to be complete this weekend.
Heavy rainfall on January 28 and 29 reflooded the worksite, delaying repairs until water had receded and the area could be made safe.
Crews are currently onsite and every effort is being made to complete repairs as quickly and safely as possible.
The pipeline was attached to the Fitzroy River Bridge which sustained extensive damage in the wake of ex-Tropical Cyclone Ellie.

Recent flooding in the Kimberley has caused widespread damage to critical infrastructure, including to a traffic bridge and wastewater pipeline spanning the Martuwarra (Fitzroy) River.
Despite access challenges, crews and materials arrived in Fitzroy Crossing on 28 January to begin repairs. About 80 metres of damaged pipeline was replaced on the eastern side of the river.
Heavy rainfall has since caused the river to rise, reflooding the worksite. Crews from Water Corporation and Main Roads are working hard to reinstate safe access by Monday 13 February so repairs can restart as quickly and safely as possible.
Advice remains to avoid swimming or fishing in the river given contaminants from several different sources may be present. Further information is available on the WA Department of Health and DFES websites.
Water Corporation understands the river’s significance to communities in the region and is making every effort complete repairs as quickly and safely as possible.

Significant damage to a wastewater main along the Fitzroy River bridge has resulted in flows that would normally be conveyed to a nearby treatment plant temporarily discharging to the Fitzroy River.
Residents are reminded not to enter floodwaters or the Fitzroy River which may contain a number of harmful contaminants, including wastewater.
Should contact occur, follow basic hygiene practices including washing affected areas of the body thoroughly with clean warm water and soap, and disinfecting open wounds. Contact a medical practitioner if you feel unwell.
Water Corporation have completed an initial assessment of the damaged wastewater main and surrounding site and plans are underway to facilitate the repairs.
This is dependent on the site being made safe for personnel to commence repairs, and critical machinery and infrastructure being transported into Fitzroy Crossing.
Water Corporation crews are continuing to work closely with emergency services and other agencies to progress these works and we’ll keep the community updated as this evolves.

Fitzroy Crossing residents are advised to avoid contact with floodwaters which may have been contaminated due to rapid, heavy rainfall infiltrating wastewater infrastructure.
Should contact occur, follow basic hygiene practices for your safety, and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any illness.
Water Corporation is also asking residents to switch off irrigation systems, if safe to do so, to ensure water is kept for essential purposes.
In the event of an evacuation, water to your home can be turned off completely via the stopcock located at the water meter. This ensures the home is isolated from the water supply.
Residents are encouraged to report any water or wastewater faults or overflows to Water Corporation’s 24/7 Operations Centre on 13 13 75.
