Elevated levels of lead reported in drinking water fountains at Optus Stadium

Residents surrounding the Optus Stadium can be reassured that their water supply meets all health related requirements and is completely safe for use.

Does Water Corporation supply the Optus Stadium?

In Western Australia, and in most parts of Australia, the water utility’s responsibility ends at the point of supply – the customer’s water meter.

Water Corporation supplies water to Optus Stadium via two meters at the boundary of the Stadium. The internal plumbing, including drinking water fountains, within the Optus Stadium site is beyond our water meter, and hence the quality of this water is the responsibility of the stadium manager, VenuesWest.

Is my water safe to drink?

Water Corporation assures residents in the surrounding suburbs near the Optus Stadium that the water we provide meets all health related requirements and is completely safe for use. Supplying safe drinking water is always our highest priority.

How do you know it is safe?

The last time the water supply zone which provides water to Optus Stadium was tested was 7 December 2017, with no detection of lead.

We also now test for lead across the metropolitan area on a quarterly basis, which is more often than the annual testing required by the Department of Health and the Australian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines.

In the past 18 years there has been no lead detected in samples taken in this water zone that supplies the area around Optus Stadium, or in the entire Integrated Water Supply Scheme, which supplies around 290 billion litres of water to 2 million people each year.

Where in the water supply do you carry out testing?

In addition to on-line, continuous monitoring at our drinking water treatment plants, we carry out regular sampling at the water source, treatment locations and at points along the water supply network for microbiological, chemical and physical parameters. These samples are analysed by independent laboratories.

How is drinking water quality regulated?

The Department of Health regulates drinking water quality in Western Australia.
