Project goal:

To upgrade the Clarke St wastewater pump station in Northam and improve the reliability of the wastewater system.

Status:

In construction.

Delivery Date:

Mid 2024.

What's happening?

The wastewater pump station at Clarke Street is aging and requires upgrades. This work will help to improve the reliability of the Northam wastewater system. To enable the pump station upgrades the existing building will need to be removed.

These upgrades include:

  • Demolition and replacement of the existing pump station building with a concrete slab and above ground cabinets.
  • Replacement of pumping, pipework, and electrical infrastructure.
  • Replacement of bollards around the perimeter.
  • New signage and installation of heritage interpretive signage.

Project Update: February 2024

Peel Terrace Bridge partial closure & night work

To complete the next phase of work, the temporary bypass system which is currently installed over Peel Terrace Bridge needs to be removed. To safely remove the bypass system, one lane of Peel Terrace Bridge will be temporarily closed.

What to expect:

  • Minor night work will occur on Clarke Street and Peel Terrace near the bridge on the evening of Thursday 29th February 2024.
  • During this time, you may notice some vehicle activity, lights, and noise. We will strive to minimise this  noise and complete the work as quickly as possible.
  • One lane of Peel Terrace Bridge will close on Friday 1st March 2024, between the hours of 9:30am and 12pm midday.
  • Traffic management will be in place to safely direct vehicles on Peel Terrace Bridge and the Avon Bridge. We ask the you please follow our signage, to help ensure the safety of our crew as well as the Northam and visiting community.

We apologise for any inconvenience, and thank you for your patience and understanding whilst this essential work is complete.

Heritage Considerations?

We recognise that the pump station building has European heritage value to the local community. We have been working with the Shire of Northam and the Heritage Council of WA to confirm the heritage approval processes are followed.

This has included:

  • Photographic archival record has prepared by independent consultant
  • Demolition approval received by the WA Heritage Council
  • Employing an architect to design interpretive signage to commemorate the WWPS and its role in the development of Northam

When is this happening?

Work on the pump station commenced in October 2023, and is expected to take up to six months to complete.

Where is this happening?

The wastewater pump station is in public open space between the Avon River and Clarke Street near to Northam Senior High School. The location of the works is shown below.

How will this impact me?

The waste water pump station will be offline while the work takes place, and a temporary bypass will be installed. The bypass pump system may require generators to be operating 24 hours per day. This may result in an extended period of noise including outside of normal working hours.

Traffic management will be in place to safely direct pedestrians and vehicles. We ask that you please follow our signage, to help ensure the safety of our crew as well as the Northam and visiting community.

We appreciate construction work can be impactful, and we thank you for your patience and cooperation whilst this essential work is carried out.
